Qualifications and experience

Sir Mr. Zaffar Iqbal Sulehri has
a degree in B.Sc Botany from Punjab University, M.Sc in Botany from Forman
Christian College later he returned to Punjab University to pursue research in
Microbial Genetics. He is also a member of the Pakistan Botanical Society.

His Story

He found his lifetime passion for
teaching as early as in grade 9 when he was relegated to the hostels in
Sialkot. Though he was studying in a good school but still it had a monotonous
routine for such an energetic and passionate person like him—wake up, study,
sleep, repeat. In his introversion, he didn’t prefer to keep many friends, so
he used to find a lot of time for himself, ruminate alone, pondering what he
really wanted out of his life. He was not materialistic mindset and was happy
with an income that shall be suffice for his needs. On the other hand he wanted
to make a difference to society—to benefit others and not just himself. Should HE
become a doctor? or a politician? or, perhaps an engineer? He didn’t entirely
know, but he kept thinking on it.

He did well at his studies, and
soon many of his classmates would come to him, asking for help with their
homework and test preparation. He loved to be helpful, so he didn’t mind
teaching them. This practice continued till university—when he was studying for
his B.Sc in Botany—where he was the best peer tutor around. And it continued
through his M.Sc. Until he finally began his postgraduate research in Microbial
Genetics, hoping that he could curb famines by studying biotech crops. After
three years of assessing, analyzing, and researching, he published his findings
in a journal in Punjab University.

He had done it, he had completed
his first research project. But he didn’t feel what he hoped to. Research was
noble, but it wasn’t something he was enjoying. he knew that he  was making a difference, but it was slow,
barely dynamic. He needed something with vigor, something that let him see the
difference right in front of his eyes as he caused it.

That’s when he began teaching.

He knew he could do it; He had virtually
spent most of his life doing it. Now, he needed to see if he could do it well
enough to be paid. He started off teaching Biology at LGS Shah Jamal, where his
students went on to obtain A grades and, eventually, gain admission in some of
the best medical universities in Pakistan, including Aga Khan University! When
he taught his first batch of students and witnessed them achieve so much, he
realized this was his calling. He was making researchers, doctors and surgeons—people
who were life savers. He was giving these children an education, and they, in
turn, went forward and used that education to save lives. There could be no
greater honor for him.
